Winston to Extend Streak

Houston Texans right tackle Eric Winston heads into the season with a streak of 39 straight games started and isn’t ready to slow down now.

The 6-7, 310-pound resident of the Bellaire section of Houston, Texas, was drafted in the third round by the Texans in 2006 and played in 12 games as a rookie, starting the final seven. In 2007 he was one of three Texans linemen to start all 16 games and continued that trend last season by starting every game as Houston rallied to win its last five and finish 8-8.

When he takes the field for the Texans’ opener on Sept. 13 at Reliant Stadium against the New York Jets, it will be the 40th straight game started for Winston, who was selected after 12 other offensive linemen, some of whom are no longer in the NFL, in the 2006 draft.

“That day really put a chip on my shoulder,” Winston says. “I made a promise to myself that I was going to out-last every one of those guys picked ahead of me. I definitely keep an eye on what’s going on with those guys and with the teams that could have picked me but chose another lineman instead.”
